Winamp for mac 20145/29/2023 ![]() Cog looks promising, although development is a little slow.Winamp 2.95 Released: Add info Size: 2. ![]() Your best bet is to either wait for someone to develop a decent media player for Mac, or develop one yourself. Sadly, Winamp is one of the many luxuries you have to give up when making the switch to the Mac platform. And even when the hypothetical port is complete - none of the third-party plugins would work, so all plugin authors would have to port their plugins to Mac OS X (very unlikely to happen). It would take so much time, effort and money that development of the main Winamp player would stagnate - and for what? Mac users make up a tiny percentage of the world's computer users, and I imagine the percentage of Mac users who would actually switch to Winamp were it available is pretty small too. However, I can't see any way for Nullsoft to justify porting Winamp to the Mac. ![]() From the Mac user's point of view, Winamp for Mac would be a Good Thing. I try to share my music files with them (which are mostly in decent formats such as Ogg Vorbis and FLAC), but it's a fair bit of hassle for them to get them playing. They're using iTunes at the moment, which has a clunky interface that's impossible to customise, and support for so few audio formats I can literally count them on one hand. However, one problem is the app no longer can tag your music automatically, making it easy to lose files. It also allows you to scan the web for new music to download. Beyond that, it is great for ripping your CDs onto your computer. I have a couple of good friends with Macs who have asked me to suggest a decent media player, but so far I've found nothing that comes anywhere near being as good as Winamp. The application provides a great platform for combining all of your music. It's fair to say that decent media players for Mac OS X are hard to come by. i know full well i'd never be able to even try to make mac builds of plugins just from the point of no compatible hardware (i don't need/can't afford/can't justify having a mac)Īnd really, if the mac platform is so great, then why aren't all the decent developers working on the platform - seems rather ironic to have a mac yet be wanting software from the evil win32 platform *shrugs* i guess i just don't get it Most aspects of a winamp for mac would be otherwise different from the current build - would require all plugins to be re-done and some would need to have complete alternatives made for them.Īnd as CraigF said, it'd just be another mp3 player without all of the community stuff. also if there ever was such a thing, you'd be effectively starting from scratch all over again (since all of the code would have to be checked, tested, fixed, tested, fixed. Personally i don't get why people want a winamp for mac build when there's already players out there which have the look of winamp since a winamp for mac would kill _all_ plugins for it and would make it no different. So, any potential benefits in the conversion process are outweighed by the severe crippling of what makes Winamp so good in the first place. To some degree, the same is true of any 64bit compiles. Converting Winamp to the Mac would result in nothing more than the base Winamp installation that is unable to load any plugins. Each of those plugins is a windows compile, targetting the windows platform. Winamp's great strength and power comes from the breadth of its plugin repository. If you have any questions, I will be gald to answer them. Another thing is if you allow it, thousands, if not, millions of users will want to use your product and the popularity for Winamp will increase a whole lot. Overall, making a Mac version will make places like to be more flexible and kind and not being focused in the world of windows.Ģ. This can help a lot of Mac users who can not install Windows on their Mac be able to get some services or for the beginners who don't know about vlc player and would rather use winamp. However, these programs although they have excellent services (like quicktime being able to convert files and edit videos, vlc player doing some funky things, and like that), I have heard that Winamp has a ton of other stuff they do not have. With VLC Player, Quicktime, RealPlayer, etc., the idea can be accomplished. First off, Macs can view about 95% of any video, image, or music files as Windows. Why should you make a version for Mac you are saying? Well I am going to explain the reasons why you should get a Mac version.ġ. I am making a request to have a Winamp for Mac.
